Investigating the chemicals in personal care products
The first personal product I use is Herbal Essences Naked Volume, White Grapefruit and Most Mint Shampoo. This product's ingredients have an overall moderate risk. The EWG's rating for this shampoo is a 5. This product is considered a low threat for containing carcinogens and a low threat of causing developmental and reproductive toxicity, with EWG rating of 1-2. However, this product contains ingredients that are considered moderate-high risk for allergies and immunotoxicity such as, methylisothiazolinone, rated 7, and methylchloroisothiazolinone, rated 6. These ingredients can cause allergic reactions and contain ecotoxic substances.
Another personal product I use is Herbal Essences Renew, Repair, Argan Oil of Morocco Conditioner. This product's ingredients have an overall moderate risk. The EWG's rating for this conditioner is 5. This product is considered a low threat for containing carcinogens and a low threat of causing developmental and reproductive toxicity, with EWG rating of 1-2. However, this product contains ingredients that are considered moderate-high risk for allergies and immunotoxicity such as, methylisothiazolinone, rated 7, and methylchloroisothialzolinone, rated 6. These ingredients can cause allergic reactions and contain ecotoxic substances.
I also use CoverGirl Lash Blast Full Bloom Mascara. This product's ingredients have an overall low- moderate risk. The EWG's rating for this mascara is 4. This product is considered a low threat for containing carcinogens (EWG rating 1-2) and a low threat for allergies and immunotoxicity (EWG rating 1-2). This product is considered a low-moderate danger for developmental and reproductive toxicity. This product contains Benzyl Alcohol which has an EWG rating of 5 and can cause organ system toxicity, allergies and immunotoxicity. This product also contains SD Alcohol 1 and Phenoxyethanol which are both rated 4 by EWG and can cause skin and eye irritation, allergies and immunotoxicity.
Overall, the products that I use daily are fairly low risk but contain some shocking ingredients. From now on, I am going to look at the ingredient list more carefully and try to limit the exotoxins and high risk ingredients in my products.
