Oceans

Andrews, Mark. "These 5 Countries Dump More Plastic In The Oceans Than The Rest of The World." Elite Readers, 24 Jan. 2016, www.elitereaders.com/plastic-pollution-ocean/.

Oceans are very important ecosystems for the world. My primary concern with oceans is the plastic and garbage that is collecting in them. Garbage, specifically plastic, is polluting the oceans and specifically gathering in certain regions, such as the North Pacific Gyre. There is a large garbage patch forming in between Japan and North America. "An ocean gyre is a system of circular ocean currents formed by the Earth's wind patterns and the forces created by the rotation of the planet" (National Geographic, 2012). These currents and wind patterns are pushing all the garbage in the water to one area. The garbage that is accumulating in this gyre is damaging aquatic life and their ecosystems. The garbage is primarily plastic, so it is not biodegradable and will continue to accumulate (National Geographic, 2012). In the North Pacific Gyre there has been many cases of marine life becoming entangled in the garbage and killed. Also, when animals consume this garbage, it causes a number of harmful effects. For example, these plastics contain harmful toxins and may poison animals when ingested (National Geographic, 2012). Garbage and plastic in the oceans is becoming such a big problem, it is predicted that by 2050 there will be more garbage in the ocean than fish (BBC, 2016).

Garbage polluting the oceans is a problem that needs to be acted on immediately. I am going to try and make a difference by reducing the amount of waste I produce. Specifically, I will limit the amount of plastic waste I contribute to landfills. I am going to make sure I properly dispose of all materials such as plastic, paper, compost and non-recyclable materials. Also, I am going to replace plastic straws and water bottles with reusable ones. Straws and plastic water bottles are among the top contributors to ocean pollution. I hope to limit my environmental impact on oceans and educate others on their responsibilities to respect our oceans.

I enjoy being exploring the ocean. Above is a video I made in Cancun Mexico.
